Millwey Rise’s hunt for a first win of the Macron League Division Four campaign goes on after they were beaten 2-1 by visiting Winkleigh, writes Dick Sturch.

Millwey played into a strong wind that swept up the pitch and the opening exchanges were uneventful until the 10th minute when Adam Buller put Winkleigh ahead with a shot that eluded the outstretched arms of Brett Garner in the home goal.

After some astute passes by Sam Turner in midfield, Dave Bridges, from wide on the right, swung the ball across the visitors goalmouth without anyone able to get the necessary touch to convert it.

Garner was again called into action when he produced a great save to keep out a close range shot from a Winkleigh forward. Millwey were eventually rewarded for their effort when Dave Bridges turned the ball into the net to equalise just before the interval.

An early second half header from Matt Lewis crashed against the crossbar as play switched from end to end. On the hour mark, Rise boss Dan Murnane introduced Nick Land in place of Bridges.

Minutes later Winkleigh went ahead when a free-kick led to Barry Dunster placing his powerful header wide of Garner.

Haydn Lewis then gave way to Sam Wadden and a few minutes later brother Matt was again unlucky when yet another header hit the bar.

Millwey were at this stage exerting a lot of pressure and nearly drew level, but Ty Allen`s header once more skimmed the top of the visitor’s crossbar. Lewis and Millwey must really have thought their luck was out when his shot was superbly turned around the post by the Winkleigh keeper.

A draw would certainly have been a fairer result, but Millwey really are missing someone up front to physically challenge their opponents defenders.

Haydn Lewis out wide must have found life frustrating, when, many times having moved into open space, his presence was ignored.

Brother Matt, who is sponsored by Millman Hallwas certainly the Rise Man of the Match for his performance of unstinting effort and a number of near things in terms of goal attempts.

On Saturday (October 13), Millwey Rise are in Exeter action with a visit to Alphington (3pm).
