Madeira had a mixture of friendly matches last week and also contested County knockout and league games, writes Jean Healey.

A men’s friendly against Honiton gave the visitors an emphatic win, but a friendly team match with Chagford (who are another outdoor club without indoor rinks) gave us an even higher score, with Gordon Medlock’s team doing the most damage.

Devon indoor bowling president Chris Beer’s team from various Devon clubs beat a Madeira men’s team 54-38.

In a tightly fought contest, David Macaulay’s rink of Colin Hughes, Chris Price and Bob Finch produced Madeira’s only win, going ahead on the penultimate end.

The same week we were pleased to welcome Devon ladies’ indoor bowling president Julie Grant with three rinks from around the county.

Deirdre Norman’s team of Jan Roberts, Fay Hughes and Ann Doidge were level at 11 ends, but then wins of four shots on each of the remaining ends made a big difference, with the final score seeing the Madeira rink win 26-11. A win and a loss on the other two rinks led to an overall home win of 59-38.

In representative matches, the men’s national Over-60s double rink A team played very strong Newquay teams, both home and away, losing by just five shots overall.

In the Denny Cup, two rinks at home and two rinks away, Madeira met an even stronger team, Exonia, packed with both county and national players.

Although knocked out, we will try again in the Denny Plate!

The ladies’ first representative game in the Lane Trophy was against Isca, who sent strong triples to Exmouth expecting to win, but Val Allam’s team of Josie Glaister and Carol Hyett held on to win 15-14.

Margaret Humphrey, Jan Worsfold and Jean Healey, away at Isca, went into the last end 16-16, before eventually losing by one shot, which meant just two points so far in the Lane campaign.

County and national individual competitions have started and Jean Rainton and Penny Preece were pleased to win their first county pairs 25-16 against an experienced Honiton pair.

In county news, four Madeira ladies have been invited to trial for Devon to play in the Atherley Trophy Inter County Competiton, which will be played against Somerset on December 15.

Christine Macaulay, Deirdre Norman, Janine Orchard and Jan Roberts will be playing their best in the trials in order to be selected.

At a recent end-of-season dinner, provided by a wonderful team of volunteer members, club president Jacky Howle thanked many members for their work and involvement, congratulating all outdoor 2018 competition winners, and, after dinner, former mayor Brian Cole regaled us all about his mayoral experiences.
