Lympstone karate students came together in aid of World Mental Health Day.

The students donned green belts to show their pledge towards good mental health while taking on a series of fitness, sparring and self-defence challenges as well as enjoying a selection of cakes.

Instructors and students enjoyed an evening of fun fitness challenges, including putting their left and right leg in and out and shaking it all about!

They also took on fighting challenges with tag karate and sparring where they got to know each other better, including simple facts as exchanging names, their favourite memories, colour and the name of their best friend.

They then turned their attention to preparing their bodies and minds for combat.

This included adults and children chasing each other to suddenly change attack in an instant on command.

There was a lot of laughter, gleeful screams and appreciation for cake. The evening cemented the benefits of physical health and how it contributes to good mental health. It also demonstrated the incredible people and support network that the club has.

Lympstone Karate Club’s Marianne Fox says: “In a rapidly changing world where pressures mount through school, work, family, friends and other activities, we are pulled in constant different directions.

“With students and instructors wearing green belts and being equal for the evening, it reminded us that we need to stand together, that we all have highs and lows.

“Just because experiences affect us differently doesn’t make them less real.

“It is through events like this that we are reminded that we need to be there for each other, to understand each other and put ourselves in others’ shoes. We all deserve happiness.”

The club is always delighted to welcome new students. Lessons are held at Lympstone Village Hall every Tuesday from 6.30pm through until 7.45pm and also on Sunday morning, 9.30am to 10.45am. The first lesson is free and then it is £4 a lesson.
