The Lyme Regis men’s three-ball better ball contest was won with a great team effort, writes Richard Jackman.

The successful trio were Bob Shepherd, David Binns and Graham Pickard, with each player contributing substantially to the team effort as they topped the leaderboard with 84 points.

In second place with a commendable 80 points, it was good to see young Samuel Beviss, accompanied by father Peter and Bob Taylor, take to the podium with another all-round team performance.

In third place, only two points behind were Jim Allen, Geoff Moss and Malcom Wilson.

The midweek stableford produced a close result but in the end it was Brian Collis who rode in with 38 points with an excellent finish, especially on the last few holes, to break the tape just ahead of David Fidge on countback.

Fidge had a strong front nine, but couldn’t quite maintain the momentum, while Rob Clapp dramatically improved after a poor start to take third spot with 37 points.

● It was a delight to see no fewer than nine eighty-plus-year-olds take the field as, for the second year running, they played over 18 holes for the Octogenarians’ Trophy.

There were some excellent scores as four of the field scored 36 points or more. David Hadwin came in with what looked like a trophy winning score as he piled up 39 points after a good solid front nine.

However, David Hickman produced a magic score of 41 as he turned up the heat, scoring 24 on the back nine, which included two, four-point holes, one of which was the tough 16th.
