As the clocks went back, so two people strode forward in the Lyme Regis monthly stableford as they won their respective divisions with scores in the 40s, writes Richard Jackman.

Steve Buxton was able to afford a blob on the second hole as he set about repairing the damage to great effect, accelerating magnificently on the back nine where he scored 21 points taking his overall tally to 40 to win Division One by two points from Andrew Dawe.

Dawe started like a greyhound scoring three points on five of the first seven holes, in his 22 point front nine, but could not maintain the pace finishing on 38 points, two shots ahead of new club president David Lock who included three gross birdies in his last five holes. In Division Two the winning margin was even greater as Ian McGown plundered points at will, including a four point gross birdie on the the 15th followed by two gross pars as he won convincingly with 41 points.

Richard Emm had a good front nine of 20 points then ‘blobbed’ 10, but held his nerve to take second place with 36 points while young Samuel Beviss playing off 28 despite a handicap of 36 still managed a very creditable 35 points to finish third.

The ladies November medal Division One, produced an exciting three-way tie on nett 76.

Jill Swainson started cautiously , but improved surely and steadily to come in with nett 76 and on countback, took a well-earned top spot, just ahead of Gilly Madill’s sure-footed second place.

Countback can be a cruel decider as the best starter misses out as countback looks at the last nine holes played, so it proved as third placed Jane Dixon started her round with a brilliant opening burst on the front nine scoring a nett 35. Division Two saw the best scores and it was very encouraging to see two newcomers to golf take the top two places.

Taking gold, with the best score of the day was Sarah Kilcoyne who played some brilliant, sensible golf to come in with a six under par nett 68, which included a gross two on the 13th. Ros Clemmans had an excellent back nine, finishing strongly with a gross birdie on the last hole in her nett 69, while an evergreen performance from Sheila Claringbold earned her third place with 76.
