Lyme Regis bowlers end season with wins over two touring sides

The 2018 Lyme Regis Bowls Club outdoor season drew to a close last weekend and the final fortnight of the campaign saw the club contest five friendlies, writes Paul Moffitt.

Two were won as success was enjoyed against two touring sides with Bannister Park defeated 97-92 and Winchmore Hill were beaten 82-70.

The other matches all ended in defeat: a home match against Seaton was lost 79-48 with just the one successful home rink, that of B Smith, E Sarson, A Sherring and P Knight, who won 20-12.

A visit from Topsham ended in a 102-89 reversal, with two home rinks winning and a home fixture against South Petherton saw the visitors depart having won 92-75 and again there were two home rink wins.

The touring sides were entertained last week, this despite the elements doing their best to try to disrupt things. It was certainly wild and windy, but both matches were played to a finish.

Last Saturday was supposed to be the annual gents versus ladies end-of-season game, but the weather intervened and the members stayed in the clubhouse for a ‘Beetle Drive’ which was set to be held in the evening.

Alan and Pam Weech kindly did the organising and general chaos followed, but a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was had by members, during which club captain Alan Nabarro saw a superb sum of £140 raised to go to his Weldmar Hospice charity.
