Honiton 2nd XV were 36-27 victors when they travelled to Mid Devon to face Tiverton III, writes Phil Bird.

The Lacemen went into the game without influential skipper Ben Welch and, with the home side boosted by a number of 2nd XV players, a tough afternoon was anticipated.

A feature of the Honiton performance was the domination the pack enjoyed, despite the size advantage enjoyed by the home side!

It was the team veterans – Jonny Galling and Austin Elliot – who combined for the opening score with the latter dotting down and Dom Lovesy slotted the conversion.

However, having got ahead, the Lacemen eased off and were punished by the home side, who ran in three quick-fire tries before young Jack Katene crossed the whitewash to leave the Lacemen trailing 17-12 at half-time.

Honiton began the second half with greater tempo to their game and an early Lovesy penalty reduced the arrears. Tivvy scored another try, but Honiton were soon back on the front foot with strong carries from likes of Mike Boraston and Josh Webber, who was outstanding in what was only his second-ever outing!

Forward power was behind the next try with Phil Bennett and Austin Elliot both prominent in the move that led to a first senior try for Kelsey Pulman.

Scrum half Bennett then went over to put Honiton ahead for the first time since the 10th minute.

Robin Bennett was next over the whitewash and another Lovesey conversion saw Honiton into a 36-22 lead with 10 minutes to play.

Tivvy hit back with the final score of the contest, but the match honours were deservedly taken by the Lacemen.

This game saw one of the best team performances by a Honiton 2nd XV for some time. There were strong performances all round but special praise must go to the four colts – Kelsey Pullman, Troy Abraham, Jack Katene and Dom Lovesy – who all showed great maturity against a very physical team and the Man of the Match award went to one of them - Dom Lovesy.
