Honiton Town senior teams set for a busy end of season

PUBLISHED: 11:39 13 February 2018 | UPDATED: 11:39 13 February 2018

None of Honiton Town’s senior sides were in action on the second Saturday of February and that means it is now 14 weeks since all three of the Hippos sides played on the same day.

Saturday, November 18, was the last time that all three Town teams played. That day the firsts went down 3-2 at University in a South West Peninsula League Eastern Division league game, since when the Hippos first team has played five more games.

The Town thirds were 3-0 winners in their home game with Sandford on November 18, since when they have played just two games – one in November and their most recent outing was a December 9 fixture! However, it’s the Hippos second team who have suffered the most, for they last played on November 18 when they went down 3-2 to University thirds at Mountbatten Park in a Macron League Division Two game.

Such a long lay-off from playing has the inevitable consequence of the Town second team having a seriously congested end of season. As things stand, with the league campaign set to be completed on, or before, Monday, May 7, the Town second team still have 18 league games to play!

This coming Saturday (February 17), the Hippos second team are set to be in action at Kentisbeare and they are now staring at playing their final 18 games of the league season in 79 days – just over 11 weeks! Indeed, the way their fixtures have been set the team will play 11 games in the 35 days between April 2 and the last day of the campaign, May 7. Any further postponements will simply compound the problem and lead to an even more congested run-in!

As well as the second team game at Kentisbeare this Saturday, the Hippos first team are in action at home to Torridgeside (3pm) while the Town third team have a Macron League Eight game at Millwey Rise Reserves. If that game goes ahead, the third team will still have 18 games to play over the last three months of the season and that invariably means lots of midweek football!
