Archant

Due to the adverse weather conditions last weekend, this year’s Grizzly was definitely different, writes Judy Davey.

The Grizzly itself was cancelled, but runners were invited to run the shorter Cub route instead.

This turned out to be nine miles of extremely tough conditions with the terrain and weather being consistent – snow!

About 1,200 runners turned up to take part and it became more of a social run than a race.

Honiton runners in finish order were: Kevin Hawker, Adam Hennessey, Tom Bornet, Will Daly, Nick Silkstone, Greg Morris, Rod Inglis, Richard Harris, Alun Gwernan-Jones, Steve Davey, Judy Davey, Roger Saunders, Hadleigh Davies, Tim Wigram, Simon Spiller, Michelle Selley, Nicola Greenland, Rachel Hennessey, Andy Ashford, Janice Newson, Mark Newson, Mark Andow, Alex Turnham, Carol Turnham, Linda Grady, Asilah Jarrald, Rebecca Stevens Karen Shaw, Joe Daly, Angus Hamilton, Teresa Pollard and Karen Hayes. Juliet Hall and Clare Melbourne also ran, but their positions are unclear.

For some, even though the run was a challenge in itself, the hardest challenge was getting back home as the road conditions had deteriorated in the few hours since runners had travelled to Seaton.

We always thank marshals, organisers and everyone else involved, but this year they need an extra special thank you. Conditions for them were worse than for the runners as they were exposed the elements for a longer period.

Tony Smith, as Race Director, and the Axe Valley Runners Grizzly Committee had to make some very tough decisions for the safety everyone.

A massive thank you to all – and congratulations on managing to put on such an event where the camaraderie of competitors, marshals and organisers was second to none.
