Honiton 2nds edged out by visiting Crediton

Honiton 2nds were edged out in a close encounter at home to a Crediton 3rd XV that was a lot stronger, bolstered by the fact that their club’s 2nd XV were without game, than the team that they had faced earlier in the season.

Honiton had first use of the elements in the gloom and started brightly, and a strong run form Wes Keywood say him open up the scoring and a Dom Lovesley conversion gave Honiton a 7-0 lead.

The lead was increased with a second Keywood try, but then the visitors grew into the contest with their two powerful centres making inroads into the heart of the home defence. During a period of pressure Crediton scored, but Honiton were soon back on the front foot and, when good ball released the ever young Dave Wellington, he still had work to do from the halfway line. However, he weaved his way through the Crediton line, ‘swatting’ off challenges to cross for a superb try.

Just on the stroke of half-time Crediton were rewarded for their endeavours in an even encounter with a push-over try, but at the break it was Honiton who held the advantage, leading 21-12.

The second half was a dour affair with both sides defending well. Honiton gave a way a penalty and the visitors scored a try to edge ahead and, despite a big late push from the home side, Crediton held on to take the match honours, by the smallest of margins at 22-21.

The Honiton Man of the Match award went to Arthur Banks, but the veteran Wellington was a mighty close second to the individual honour.
