A solitary 10th minute strike from Jack Hocking was enough to give East Budleigh Reserves a 1-0 home win over Village Inn, writes Mark Auton.

What was a seventh successive victory for the team also means they maintain their current 100 per cent record in Macron League Division Seven games so far this season.

It was more of a battling display from Budleigh, who had to soak up the pressure in the second half as the away side threw everything at the Jays’ rear guard.

Man of the Match went to Budleigh keeper Drew Shorrock, who saved his side with a couple of smart reaction saves, whilst the defence of Matt Tiddmarsh, Dave Clow, Luke Kelsall and Shaun Mabin all worked tirelessly.

Ollie Clark claimed the assist for the early Hocking goal and it was the latter who went close again volleying marginally over from a Tiddmarsh free-kick.

Nine minutes into the second half a set piece from Josh Sale saw Kelsall rise well at the back post, with his header agonisingly wide of the upright, before the visitors took control.

Callum Wade came off the bench and did his best to hold the ball up for Budleigh; the away side should have found the net, but Budleigh held out with some dogged defending and the efforts of Shorrock.

Budleigh are in cup action this Saturday (October 13) hosting North Devon League side Bridgerule from Holsworthy in the Devon Intermediate Cup (2pm).
