Exmouth II 63, Okehampton 5

Exmouth Quins entertained Okehampton at the Royal Marine Camp pitch in a Devon Merit Table fixture rearranged from September.

Although the visitors arrived short of two props, Exmouth’s Simon Hartery and Mick Smith kindly offered to play for them in order for a competitive game to go ahead in the freezing conditions.

Exmouth fielded a strong side, even though veteran Jon Hill had to play at 10, and early on they were always looking to attack, but the visitors surprised the crowd with some tenacious defence and some good attacking play of their own. It took nine minutes for Exmouth to break the deadlock when centre Tom Kill found space and raced in from the half way line. With the conversion going slightly wide of the posts it was Okehampton’s turn to pressurise the Exmouth line and they were rewarded with a try on 19 minutes from their guest prop Mick Smith.

This was the wake-up call that that the home side needed, and from then on they took charge to dominate the remainder of the contest.

Lewis Edwards flew down the wing to score his first try for the club and Adam Higgins converted to put the hosts 12-5 to the good.

Jack Westlake then got his name on the score sheet and Kill added the extra’s before Kill helped in the build up to a second try for Edwards to send the Quins into half-time with a 24-5 advantage.

After the break the home dominance continued. From the re-start Higgins barged his way over following a great driving maul from the forwards and Naca Kinikinilau converted.

Two minutes later number-eight Milo Reynolds broke blind from a scrum in Okehampton’s half and raced clear to score before Kill again showed a clean set of heels to the opposition to cross. Edwards finished off a sweeping passing move to net his hat-trick try and within four minutes he had a fourth try after a terrific pass from Jack Madge.

Okehampton battled bravely, but were powerless to stop Kinikinilau claiming another try and, when Kill crossed the visitors line for his hat-trick score moments later the referee called time with 14 minutes of the game still remaining with Exmouth 63-5 victors.

This coming Saturday (January 26) the Quins entertain Torquay.
