Four swimmers from Exmouth Masters travelled to Weston-super-Mare to compete in the Swim England South West Region Masters Championships, writes Marcus Allen.

All four swimmers did very well and one of them, Peter Gilpin, broke the Welsh Record in the 50m freestyle in a time of 29:67.

Ian Lang, just back from swimming marathon distance swims in the Lake District, quickly adjusted to short course and achieved times which will put him in a good position for the National Masters Championships at the end of October; the highlight of his swims was a time of 2:50.80 in the 200m breaststroke.

Louise Kathro beat her target times to win her age group in the 50, 100, and 200m freestyle events and is also looking forward to the Nationals at the end of October.

Bill Letch swam impressively, as ever, winning his four events; when these times had been age adjusted Bill was the fastest swimmer at the meet in all four events. The points gained from these swims place Bill in the top ten of this year’s men’s National Decathlon Competition.

Five juniors from the club’s competitive and development section attended the Tiverton Sparkler Open meet where they were seeking county and regional qualifying times, coming away with nine personal bests and five medals. The youngest Exmouth swimmer, William Senjack, took gold in the nine and under 100 metres backstroke in a time that was a new club record for his age group.

A similar feat was also achieved by Grace Gillingham, who took gold in the same event and beat the club record that had stood since 1997.

Grace also recorded a new club record in the 50metres freestyle, and achieved a personal best and first place finish in the 200 metres breaststroke.

Lily Allen came away with gold and silver in the 200metres and 100metres backstroke respectively, the latter of which was swum exactly to her personal best time. She also improved her time in the 50metres freestyle.

Whilst unlucky not to finish amongst the medals, there were great performances from Megan Harris and Abbie Freeman. Megan had a personal best in both the 100 metres backstroke and 200 metres breaststroke.

Both the Masters and Junior swimmers will be looking to take their form into the forthcoming Club Championships, which will be held throughout October and November at Exmouth Leisure Centre.

The club is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, and in addition to its masters, competitive and development section, there are also learn to swim and open water sections. Anyone interested in joining the club can find contact details on the club’s website www.exmouthswimming.org
