Exmouth enjoyed a week off last Saturday as did the remainder of the South West Premier teams, but all are back in action this Saturday when the Cockles will be looking to secure their first away league win since November 2017.

The Cockles are in action at Newton Abbot and will be seeking to end a run of 10 successive league defeats with their last win on the road in terms of the pursuit of league points being last November 11 and a 22-20 win at Camborne.

Indeed, since an April 9, 2016, 64-13 win at Old Patesians, the Cockles have played 30 away league matches, winning just two, with a 40-29 September 9, 2017 win at Ivybridge and that last November success at Camborne.

In the past 100 away league games, the Cockles have won 41 and lost 59. The biggest damage to their away form have been the two seasons they have spent in National Two over the past eight years – campaigns when they lost each one of their away matches.

The current run going back over the 100 away matches gets as far as back as the 2010/11 season when the Cockles were in National League Three (SW) and a Fenruary 12, 2011, 57-29 win at Cleve.

In that particular season, the Cockles won eight and lost five of their 13 away matches. In the 2012/13 season – again in National Three (SW), the Cockles won 10, drew one and lost just one of their 13 games. That season the Cockles finished as runners-up, ending the campaign with 107 points which was 10 less than champions, London Irish Wild Geese. That campaign the Cockles only defeats through the season were two at home to Newton Abbot and London Irish Wild Geese and only one away, a 15-22 reversal at Newton Abbot, and they also drew 13-13 at London Irish Wild Geese.

In the 2013/14 season, playing for the first time in National Two (S) the Cockles had a torrid time losing all 14 of their way games.

That sent them back to National Three (S) for the 2014/15 season and a campaign of 13 away matches, nine of which were won and four were lost. The following season, 2015/16, also on National Three (SW), saw the Cockles win eight away and lose five and that saw them up again into National Two for the 2016/17 campaign. However, as had happened three years before in another short spell in National Two (S), the Cockles again failed to win a single away league game losing all 15 that campaign.

The 2017/18 season saw the Cockles play their trade in the South West Premier and they won just two away; at Ivybridge and at Camborne, while they lost the other 11 of their 13 away games and so far this season, at the start of another South West Premier campaign, the Cockles have lost both away games so far.

In recent times the best run of successive wins that the Cockles have enjoyed has been a sequence of eight matches between March 2012, when they won the final two away games of the 2011/12 season and they won the first six of the 2012/13 season.

As for the Cockles recent visits to Newton Abbot for league games, they have won on just one of their last four visits. Their last success there was in the 2015/16 National League Three (SW) season when, on November 7, they won 22-17. The Cockles lost at Newton Abbot last season, beaten 48-42 and also lost 25-27 in the 2014/15 campaign and lost 22-15 when the pair met in South Devon in their December 15, 2012 meeting.
