Archant

East Budleigh were twice in the lead before ending disappointed not to have banked at least a point in what was ultimately a Macron League Division Three 3-2 defeat at home to Newton St Cyres, writes Mark Auton.

Live wire Jacob Rice struck as early as the fifth minute and was denied a second by the visiting keeper when picking up a flick from Hugo Demetre.

Newton were gradually growing in confidence and levelled the score four minutes before the break.

On the hour mark, Budleigh regained the advantage with a fine team goal; Liam West, George Harris and Rice were all involved as Liam Mabin looped a header over the keeper and into the net at the back post.

Seven minutes later the away side made it 2-2 before West was denied; his well-struck shot hit the crossbar and looked to have crossed the line as it bounced down, but no goal was given.

It was left to Newton to grab a winner and stun Budleigh, who will look to show ‘bounce back’ ability against Exeter University this Saturday.

● East Budleigh were 4-1 winners when they made the short trip to Budleigh Salterton Reserves for a league fixture.

Defending into the wind in the first half East Budleigh had to weather many Budleigh attacks, but none that really troubled glovesman Mark ‘Crouchy’ Bown.

Towards the end of the half East Budleigh took the lead; a well struck corner from George Harris caused problems in the box and it was Dan Atkinson who was quickest to react, looping a header over two players on the line and into the net.

Early in the second half the home side were awarded a debatable penalty that was converted by Alex Wicks.

Despite this, East Budleigh started to assert their passing game and regained the lead when a good move down the right found Liam Matthew, who drilled a low shot under the keeper at the near post.

Following this a free-kick into the area by Steve Hitchcock was met well by the hard-working Hugo Demetre for the twinkle-toed Liam West, who found the space to put the ball into the bottom corner. To round things off Man of the Match, Harris scored the goal of the game. He found himself on the edge of the area. His first shot was blocked, but not to be denied, he curled a glorious shot into the top corner.

The Blue Jays will be happy with the bragging rights, but happier still to be in pole position at the top of the table.
