Denny and White net as Robins knock holders out of the cup

Budleigh Salterton knocked Devon Premier Cup holders Cronies out of the competition with a terrific all-round show at Greenway Lane that saw them win 2-1.

Cronies are a Macron League Premier Division side and arrived at Greenway Lane with an unblemished record this season.

The Robins made a confident start and bossed much of the opening 20 minutes, but without being able to find a finish to match some impressive approach play.

All that changed on the half hour when, in the space of just eight minutes, the game saw its three and only goals!

Budleigh struck first with Callum Shipton and Aaron Denny linking well before Denny drilled the ball home from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Straight from the re-start, Budleigh won the ball back and, when it fell to Denny he rifled it goalwards. The ball was too hot to handle for the Cronies glovesman and it span out to Mike White, who needed no second invitation to power it home and double the Robins lead.

Just seven minutes later the lead was halved when a cross from the right was tucked past Budleigh glovesman Alan Doble by Matt Webb.

The second half was just seven minutes old when Harry Gibbings found himself through one-on-one. But he fired his shot into the side netting. Cronies carried a threat, but they got no change out of the solid Budleigh back line and the nearest either side came to a goal in the second half was 10 minutes from time when Jordan Harris provided a superb pass to release substitute Danny Williams, but the former Budleigh player-boss saw his goal-bound effort superbly tipped over by Cronies glovesman Jacob O’Callaghan.

Left back Luke Iddon was named the Budleigh Man of the Match. This Saturday (October 14), Budleigh are back in Eastern Division league action when they entertain Bovey Tracey at Greenway Lane (3pm).
