Exmouth colts shared 20 points in a close encounter with visiting Honiton, writes Rob Masters.

The contest was played out in conditions that were not conducive to flowing rugby. Honiton, with the wind behind them, applied some early pressure on their hosts.

However, the Cockles defence was resolute until an infringement gave Honiton the opportunity to take three points from a well-struck penalty.

It looked as though the early penalty was going to be the only score of the half until Tom Preece put up a high ball that was gathered by wing Fin Frazer, who was in fine form.

The ball was moved swiftly from the right wing to the left, which found Jack Greenaway in space and the Cockles had the first try of the match just before the break.

The second half started again with Exmouth on the front foot with big ball carrying from the Exmouth forwards that was supported by swift and accurate movement through the backs. With Exmouth pressing hard on the visitors’ line they soon grabbed their second try when Preece found the gap to make it 10-3 to Exmouth.

The match continued a hard-fought battle with both sides playing some good rugby in appalling weather and it looked as though Exmouth were due their deserved victory when a deliberate 30m knock-on at the line out went unnoticed by the referee and Honiton scored a converted try from the resulting gain in field position.

As the match closed Exmouth were denied a third try by a firm defensive finish from Honiton and the match ended with the score level at 10-10.

This was a much-improved performance from the Cockles and Exmouth director of rugby John Justice left the pitch side very encouraged.

Man of the Match was named as Macaulay (Macca) Couch, who led the forwards with great tenacity.
