Comets and Exejets both fielded strong squads for what was a terrific Exmouth Netball encounter, won by Comets 46-39, writes Pam Taylor.

Both teams began well, but it was Comets who held a tenuous two-goal lead at quarter time. In the second quarter, shooters Cara Monaghan and Tracey Abbott for Comets made every shot count, matched by Jaz Tuckett and Sophie Tokens for Exejets.

Strong centre court and defence by both teams ensured the contest ran goal-for-goal and the halfway mark was reached with Comets still holding a narrow two-goal advantage.

The third quarter saw both teams make mistakes with passing choices. Shannon Beverley and Hayley Edwards, defending for Exejets, were quick to intercept stray passes and through their centre court trio of Shelly Brooks, Kelly Ball and Chloe Lomax push the ball forward for the shooters to convert into goals.

Likewise, Alexis Bush and Gill Hall in the centre and wing attack positions for Comets stayed strong and kept the shooters supplied with shooting chances. Comets were just ahead by four goals at this stage.

At the beginning of the fourth and final quarter, Comets threw away the four-goal lead and Exejets pounced on the opportunity to level things up!

Comets steadied themselves and had to use all of their experience to once again take control with the defensive trio of Yvonne Sparkes, Jo Sunter and Annabel Russell instrumental in picking up any loose pass from Exejets and turning it to Comets’ advantage, helping to guide their side into a 46-39 advantage at full time.

Sophie Tokens for Exejets was outstanding with her movement around court and accurate passing and shooting and was named Player of the Match for her team by the umpires. Other individuals to catch the eye in a fine contest were Shannon Beverley for Exejets and Yvonne Sparkes for Comets.

In a recent report we carried an incorrect score – Comets defeated Cougars 65-24 to continue their fine run in the league this season.
