Withycombe Under-16s put in a good solid all-round shift before being edged out 24-15 by Kingsbridge in a Fisherman’s Cup meeting.

Taking to the field against what looked to be a much larger home opposition side, Withy made a good start, putting early pressure in the Kings’ line, but the opposition scrum was solid and they cleared their lines.

Despite the conditions, which left the ball, at times, resembling a bar of soap, both sides handled well. However, a mix of poor passes and a little panic led to Kingsbridge opening the scoring.

The Withy response was positive and a high ball launched by Will Cooper was fumbled, allowing Finn Musgrove to pick up and score under the posts. The conversion was good and Withy held a narrow lead. Back came Kingsbridge with an unconverted try, but a Will Cooper penalty kept the Withy score ticking over.

In their next attack, following a good scrum, Withy scored again as Musgrove crossed for his second try and Withy trooped off at the break with a 15-10 advantage.

In the second half, with the slope and weather in their favour, Kingsbridge began to build pressure and it was the South Devon side who bagged the first score of the second half.

Withy were soon battling back up field, but, for some reason, they opted to decline a ‘kickable’ penalty and the ball was eventually cleared.

In the final minutes the home side scored a converted try to complete the scoring.

Withycombe had some good chances to come away with a win, but the final pass either didn’t come or went to ground. The Withy Man of the Match awards went to Will Cornish and Solomon Mcintyre.
