Chard III battle bravely against powerful Wyvern side

PUBLISHED: 17:47 01 October 2018 | UPDATED: 17:47 01 October 2018

When you see a score line of 93- 5 you would naturally assume that the beaten team where on the receiving end of a thrashing by a far better squad of players and in this case you would be right, writes Gavin Smillie.

Wyvern, in beating Chard III by that score line, showed why they have been playing at a higher level in previous seasons and no doubt they will be challenging for promotion if they can keep their team together.

For the aging Chard team it most certainly was not all bad! Firstly they put out a team of 16 men that came out to play social rugby and, even though the score didn’t go their way, they will be back next week, with the same enthusiasm playing away to Cheddar Valley and secondly for Chard as a whole putting out three teams comprising of over 50 players is a win in itself.

Chard actually didn’t play badly, they just couldn’t cope with the pace of the game and probably in the depths of winter with the mud and rain the score maybe a little closer, John Hewitt and Lee Taylor both had a standout game at hooker and scrum half respectively and Shaun Boobyer proved his credentials by putting in a man of the match performance. Mick Duffy was the man to cross the line for Chard and Nathan Clapp came close on more than one occasion.

Congratulations to Wyvern on the win and best of luck for the rest of the season we look forward to hosting you at the end of the season.
