Chard and Minehead 2nd XVs played before a surprisingly large crowd and the home support were not to be disappointed as the Chard team served up a terrific all-round performance to win 66-8, writes Gavin Smillie.

Chard were quickly into their stride and, following early pressure on the visitors line, from a line out the ball was sent out to number 10 Sam Mouland, who jinxed through for the opening try under the post and Ieuan Watkins struck the first of what would ultimately prove to be nine successful conversions.

The visitors hit back with a penalty, but it was soon Chard back on the front foot and, from a quick tap penalty that caught the Minehead defence off guard, Harry Cleal crossed the whitewash.

Minutes later Ben Partridge got on the score sheet and Chard trooped off at the interval holding a 19-3 lead.

Substitutions were made at half-time with Joel Nicholls going to hooker and there was a welcome return from injury for Zak Stabbins.

Minehead restarted and the kick was collected by Cleal who promptly weaved his way through the away side to score his second try and, moments later, Max Mainwaring also scored a try and, just minutes into the second half, Chard led 31-3.

A Nick Lester try followed by another Watkins conversion and then a Watkins try – and conversion – and Chard led 45-3.

There was a 10 minute lapse in the scoring before Ash Wilson-Briant crossed the whitewash and Watkins converted. From the restart, Chard worked the ball along the line and Mainwaring bagged his second try of the game. Cleal then completed his hat-trick of tries before Mainwaring also completed his hat-trick of tries which just left time for Minehead to score a last gasp consolation try.
