Budleigh Salterton sailor Ben Cornish is in action this week in Spanish waters, competing in the 2018 Finn European Championships being held off Cadiz.

Many of the sailors had battled through the storms that Europe has been suffering over the past fortnight to arrive in Southern Spain.

One of the Swedish teams thought they had it rough with a 52-hour drive from Uppsala, stopping only to change drivers and top up with gas.

But their trip was surpassed by Norwegian Anders Pedersen, who also had to contend with several snow storms, sleeping in the car in minus15 degrees in Berlin before picking up a new boat in Poland and then enduring an 11-hour traffic jam in France due to snow and high winds!

He arrived just in time to witness the first-ever tornado to strike Puerto Sherry, Cadiz, which did significant damage in and around the marina! The wind is set to play a big part in the racing, which runs throughout the week to a grand conclusion on Saturday (March 17) when the top 10 sailors from the week will meet for the double-points-scoring medal race. Twenty-six-year-old Ben, one of no fewer than 10 British sailors in the 91-strong fleet, was third in the Euros of last year and looks well set going into this first major of 2018.

He says: “We have been able to enjoy some great training, first in Miami during January and more recently here in Cadiz before the start of the championships. Everything is pointing to the wind being a dominant factor for the week and that should make for some good racing conditions.”

We asked Ben if he had a preference for fast blowing winds with racing then becoming more of a challenge involving strength and power, or lighter winds where the racing becomes more of a tactical battle.

Ben responded saying: “My personal preference is the stronger winds. With less wind, it’s generally harder to predict what the correct strategy will be, but offers close tactical racing.

“The stronger winds still require the correct tactical decisions. However, the physical demands increase and therefore rewards those who can push themselves physically and make the correct decisions under fatigue!”

We wish Ben every success throughout the week in Cadiz.
