Budleigh Salterton indoor bowlers at the start of a new season

The Budleigh Buzzhawks were in fine form again this week as they won all the points on offer in their Budleigh Evening League encounter with the Budleigh Falcons, writes David Roberts.

Playing on the back of their comprehensive win over Sidmouth, confidence was high and an overall win on both rinks 49-27 takes them to the top of the league.

Leighton Burston, Dick Mitchell and skip David Tomlinson were always in control and piled on the pressure in the last quarter of the match, registering 17 shots and winning through 30-13.

Brian Ward, Peter Cooper and skip David Roberts were slow out of the blocks, but played a good tactical game to take their rink 19-14.

In the Exonia League there was a fine performance from the Budleigh Triple, who were unlucky not to win the match against the Exonia Chiefs.

In a match with the lead changing hands on two or thee occasions, the Budleigh men of Gerard McCarthy, Peter Cooper and David Roberts went into the last end one shot up only for the Chiefs to take the shot and secure a 15-15 draw.

Nevertheless, this represents a good result in the opening match of the season.

These two matches were the only good news for the club on the playing front as the men suffered a heavy defeat in their opening fixture in the Over-60s League against Maderia, slumping to a 107-53 reversal.

The best of the Budleigh rinks was that of Keith Edwards, Peter Burch, Gerry Roberts and skip John Dill, who only lost out by five shots at 23-18, whilst the other rinks were well beaten.

In a ladies’ home friendly, it was Maderia again who had the upper hand, winning 43-26 with both rinks failing to make their mark. Melissa Camp, Hilary Medley, Di Lowe and Mo Bond put up a spirited performance, but lost out by seven shots.

In the Tuesday morning triples league there were wins for Team Beech 16-12 and Team Willow as Lilian Grainger, John Dill and skip Brian Evans convincingly defeated Team Ash 31-10.
