Any new season, playing bowls on a different surface is always an interesting challenge and to start finding your width and length can be a frustrating time, writes David Roberts.

However, the Budleigh bowlers have made an impressive positive start to the new indoor season.

Playing away in a mixed friendly at Mid Devon over two rinks there was overall victory of 41 shots to 28.

Ann Vincent, Gerard McCarthy, Paul Griffin and skip Dawn Graham won through 25-14 whilst Don Huish, Bunty Hudson, Brian Evans and Mo Bond scored three shots on the final end to take their match 16-14.

A visit to ISCA earlier in the week was more of a challenging affair, but still a great effort from the Budleigh bowlers. Mo Bond, Tony Lim, Mike Clark and Bunty Hudson won a very close game 15-13 whilst Ann Vincent, Derek Stanley, Hilary Medley and Peter Cooper found their opponents on top form and lost out 12-35.

In the Sidmouth Evening League, there was a great start for the Budleigh men as they won their opening match 23-17 against strong and experienced opposition.

There were good contributions from all the team – Gerard McCarthy, Don Huish, Terry Escott and skip Paul Griffin – as they came from behind to outplay their opponents in the final ends.

The Budleigh Evening League kicked off with a win for the Budleigh Falcons against the Exonia Eagles 34-32 to take four of the six points.

Keith Edwards, Gerard McCarthy and Terry Escott took their rink 23-18 with some solid bowls.

In a close match on the other rink Richard Cooper, Don Huish and Terry Kelly were always chasing their opponents’ score and just lost out 11-14.

In the Budleigh Ladies’ Triples League, Melissa Camp, Mo Bond and Celia Mangeng had a difficult start to their season with a 16-26 defeat, but overall the first week of bowling for the Budleigh members was a very encouraging one.

A busy week ahead sees mixed friendlies against Exonia and Sidmouth whilst the men and ladies make separate visits to Maderia and Sidmouth and the evening leagues play their next round of matches.
