Budleigh all set for Captain’s Day meeting on Saturday

As the outdoor season draws to a close the end of season encounter with local rivals Sidmouth is always a competitive affair and this year the Budleigh ladies welcomed their neighbours to Cricket Field Lane whilst the men made the short journey to Sidmouth, writes David Roberts.

At Sidmouth, four rinks of triples saw Budleigh winning just one with Sidmouth triumphing 73-61. Derek Stanley, Peter Hillman and Brian Ward pulled away towards the end of their match scoring nine points in the last six ends to run out 21-17 winners.

Tony Barnes, Mike Shaw and Gerry Roberts made a late comeback but just missed out 13-14 relinquishing an early lead. Sidmouth dominated on the other two rinks but as ever a great afternoon in the sun.

At home, the ladies came up against a very strong Sidmouth contingent and whilst fighting hard lost out on all three triple rinks 28-51.

So, a double defeat on the same day for the men and ladies and congratulations must go to the Sidmouth club.

Captain’s Day beckons this coming Saturday (September 16) when the club celebrates the successes of the season and the presentation of trophies take place.

The club looks forward to welcoming its members.

There remain two matches with Bradninch visiting Budleigh on Thursday whilst the final match of the outdoor campaign will be the home meeting with Beaufort Bowls Club on Sunday (September 17).
