A total of 88 runners turned out at Great Trethew, with the Cornish track putting an issue on stamina, writes Granville Taylor.

Ross Oliver’s Wee Fly got her head in front for the first time this season when successfully carrying her 7lbs penalty under Jo Buck in the Mixed Open. Ten-year-old Wee Fly stayed on gamely to hold the rallying Celtic Society and Prince de Bersy

Neil Harris rode two winners during the afternoon and also saddled a winner from his Brompton Regis base on a card featuring a proliferation of maiden races. The Brightwells young horse maiden for four and five year olds was split into two divisions, and the maiden confined to four to seven-year-olds also had to be divided on the day into three divisions.

Harris got the Camilla Scott trained newcomer Best Boy Barney home after a battle with Shanann Star in one of the maidens before legging up Vicky Wade to win another of the divisions on Damascus Steel. This four-year-old won comfortably to provide his owner Simon Cook with his first ever winner. Harris went on to complete a double for himself and the Camilla Scott yard when Special Account made amends for his first fence mishap at Buckfastleigh last Sunday. A schooling day at Black Forest Lodge in the interim had obviously paid dividends for this progressive seven -year-old. Darren Edwards was also in good form, and he steered home maiden race winners Ikie Mo and Takamaru to take him into double figures for the season. Ikie Mo’s task was made easier when the challenging Horizontal Speed blundered at the last. The winner is owned by the Bradley Partnership which consists of his trainer Nicky Martin and her partner John Simpson.

Takamaru returned to emotional scenes in the unsaddling enclosure after winning his division. The ex-David Pipe seven-year-old ran in the colours of Donna Kingdon, girl friend of trainer Ashley Farrant. Donna recently passed away after a long illness aged 31. Her colours were embellished with a black armband as a mark of respect.

Josh Guerriero returned from injury to land the first maiden on the five-year-old chestnut mare Florence. Well backed for her debut, Florence jumped well and drew clear of Rumpleteazer down the hill. Guerriero, an assistant trainer to Victor Dartnall, had suffered serious damage to a cruciate ligament four months ago and was having his first ride back on Florence. He was almost in the wars again an hour later when parting company with The Wealerdealer, who was disputing the lead with Takamaru when jinking badly approaching the second last.

Tom Chanin also rode his first winner since a spell on the sidelines when Sue Trump’s home bred Kirkleigh relished the conditions to win the Restricted. Tom’s father Robert trains this useful looking seven-year-old. “He needs the mud and is an out and out stayer,” said the trainer.

Fountains Cloud made a successful racecourse re-appearance to win the Members’. Leanda Tickle sent the grey clear at half way to score easily, giving the 22-year-old rider her third winner of the season Fountains Cloud is trained locally by David Stephens who explained, “he won his maiden in the mud here exactly two years ago, but broke a bone behind his knee in his next race. He is a half brother to Chesnut Annie and I think he is pretty smart.”
