Boca win cup shoot-out

Devon Premier

Boca Seniors’ much delayed third round Devon Premier Cup match was certainly worth the wait as they came through at Okehampton Argyle in a penalty shoot-out.

There was little sign of the drama to come in a goalless opening half.

Boca keeper Jimmy Thorne was forced into a fine save just after the hour, but on 70 minutes they took the lead with a close-range effort from Matthew Deacon. Thorne saved well again to keep Boca in front, but with victory in their grasp, Okey grabbed an equaliser in the last minute of normal time.

Extra time failed to settle this close encounter and so began the penalty nailbiter. Boca’s takers proved nerveless as they all slotted home, with just one miss costing Okey the tie. In the next round Boca now meet University of Exeter.

Appledore led just after half-time away to last season’s cup finalists Stoke Gabriel, but slipped to a 3-1 defeat.

The first half was goalless, with Appledore keeper Curtis Parkin pulling off some fine saves to keep their sheet clean.

Soon after the re-start the Fishermen took the lead when a Seth Hodorowski shot could only be parried by the home keeper and Nick Glover nipped in to knock home the rebound.

But a penalty decision after a ball was struck against a defender’s arm brought Stoke level and it gave them the foothold they needed to push on to a 3-1 victory.

Holsworthy also dipped out of the cup 4-2 at home to Teignmouth.

The match was effectively decided inside the opening quarter-hour, in which Teignmouth opened up a 3-0 lead. A Dominic Abbot free kick and a good strike by new signing Roger Boneparte gave Holsworthy their second-half goals .

Devon Senior

THERE was disappointment for Lynton and Lynton as they missed out on a quarter-final place in the Devon Senior Cup, beaten 2-1 away to Buckfastleigh.

Despite having a couple of key players missing, Lynton see this as a match they should have won, but in which they ultimately paid the price for a lacklustre second half performance.

Playing up the slope in the first half, they took the lead after a good save from stand-in keeper Paul Hopkins was cleared and Steve Kingdon sent C J Roberts through and he out-paced and out-muscled the defender to slot home.

Buckfastleigh equalised when Lynton gave the ball away in their own half and it was put into their box. Despite ample opportunities to clear it, they didn’t and it fell to a Buckfastleigh player on the edge of the box, whose shot bobbled into the corner.

Lynton paid for a poor second half performance when a defender mis-judged trying to clear a corner and left his man at the back post for a free header that proved to be the matchwinner.

Although this stung Lynton into better action, their only real chance came when Roberts went through, but the keeper came out quickly and did well to block his shot.

Devon Intermediate

Hartland gained their win of the season so far when they moved into the area final of the Devon Intermediate Cup at the expense of Barnstaple FC, who are unbeaten in the league.

In an 11-goal thriller, Hartland came through 6-5 with four goals from Richard Davey and others by Joe Deacon and Michael Nugent.

Barnstaple goals came from Connor Nash (3), Tom Nash and Stuart McKinnon.

In the area final Hartland will meet Northside Atlantic, who came through a tough encounter away to Torridgeside Reserves 3-2, despite a torrid time with injuries.

Northside took the lead through Vinny Bott after 10 minutes only for Torridgeside to quickly strike back.

Tom Gleeson made it 2-1 with a fine finish, but Northside then lost Shaun Wilson and Damo Shaddick to injuries with half-an-hour gone and Torridgeside came back to level the match.

Just before half time Neil Armstrong played a pin point pass into Vinny Bott who restored the Northside lead, only to pull up when scoring the goal and at half time they had used all three of their subs.

Tom Gleeson then pulled up with tight calves, but had to soldier on and Northside spent the remainder of the game deep in their own half.

Torridgeside did find the net again, but it was ruled out for offside.
