Withy Under-12 action from their meeting with Teignmouth

Withycombe Under-14s were 47-15 winners when they travelled to North Devon to meet a strong Bideford outfit.

The hosts began brightly and Withy spent much of the early exchanges defending inside their 22.

However, they held the home side at bay and, when they first got their hands on the ball, quick hands found centre Jude Baker-Hands in space, and he sprinted from within his own 22 all the way to the line and winger Harry Bennett converted. Soon after, a Bideford error saw the ball again reach Bennett, who this time sprinted clear from his own half and he also converted the try to give Withy a 14-0 lead.

Bideford hit back with a try from their strong-running centre. Withy kicked off and forced turnover, which ended with the ball being passed along the back line to where full back Charlie Passmore found Bennett with a long pass, and he raced away to score under the posts. Again Bennett converted and the Withy lead was now 21-5.

There was still first-half time for Baker-Hands to cross for the fourth Withy try, converted by Bennett and the teams trooped off at the break with Withy 28-5 to the good.

Early in the second half Bennett raced clear for his third try, one he duly converted, and then, having moved into the number eight berth, Bennett picked up from the base and drove through from close range to score his fourth try. He kicked the conversion, his sixth successive kick of the day!

Bideford, to their credit, kept playing strong attacking rugby. They forced an error from a Withy scrum and they picked up and raced over. This lifted the hosts and they added a third try before Withy had the final say when, following some dominant forward drives, flanker Max Wilkinson went over to complete the scoring.
