Budleigh Salterton suffered an 11-0 defeat on their visit to Torridgeside for their latest South West Peninsula League Eastern Division outing, writes Steve Birley.

The Robins were all square with the North Devon side for the first 26 minutes and, during this period of the game, there was little between the sides.

However, the deadlock was broken in the 26th minute when, from the re-start, the Robins lost possession, the ball was launched up and over the Budleigh back line and was soon nestling in the bottom of the net!

Two goals in the space of a minute changed the context of the contest and the home side added three more before the break and scored another six in the second half.

Budleigh cannot be faulted for their attitude or their collective battling performance and, in terms of individual contributions, Johnny Hitchcock put in a good shift on the right flank.

The journey to Torridgeside had been an elongated one and the Robins face similar this Saturday (October 6) when they re-trace their journey, this time heading for Torrington to contest a Devon Premier Cup tie that has a 2pm kick-off. And that means, given the travel problems last Saturday’s journey to North Devon encountered, the side will have to depart at 11am this time round, which knocks out of contention the players who have to work on a Saturday morning.

Making things all the tougher for new Budleigh boss Matt Hughes, he must also take a team back to North Devon for a third successive Saturday on October 13 when they are tasked with a league game at Appledore!

All these away games add to the growing expenses for the club to finance in terms of travel and are factored in to what is a difficult time on and off the pitch. The last Saturday game was on September 15 and the next one is on October 20, which means a period of five weeks with no Saturday home game and three trips to North Devon – who’d be a football club treasurer!
