Budleigh Salterton’s new boss Matt Hughes made a great start to his management of the Robin’s first team as he saw them draw 2-2 with University in a midweek league encounter under the Greenway Lane floodlights, writes Alan Beer.

The opening exchanges were very even with Budleigh, still looking for their first point of the new season having lost all their opening eight games.

Indeed, when the sides had met just 7 days before in Exeter, the students had won 6-3.

The first real chance of the game fell to University in the 38th minute but Alan Doble produced a fine save. However, the Budleigh glovesman was beaten just a minute before the break when Arthur Ambler scored with a penalty awarded after a clumsy challenge in the home area.

Ten minutes into the second half Ethan Slater did well down the right and when he crossed, Kyle Bassett, making his first appearance this season at Greenway Lane, was unlucky not to score when the keeper was beaten only for the glovesman’s trailing leg to keep the ball out of the net.

Two minutes later and Budleigh went even closer when it needed a defender to desperately clear off the line to deny the home side.

Just past the hour mark the students doubled their lead and the source was one of their very fast wingers! His cross was met by Liam Rees who fired past a helpless Doble.

With just eight minutes remaining Budleigh were given a life-line when the referee spotted a push in the area and George Pannell drilled the spot kick home.

Bouyed by the goal, the Robins went in search of another and it duly arrived two minutes from time when a teasing ball into the University area was turned home from close range by Cameron Brown, another making a most welcome first appearance of the campaign for Budleigh.

So a point at last for the Robins who were certainly good value for a share of the spoils. New boss Matt Hughes has made an immediate impression and he will look for more of the same when the Robins travel to Torridgeside on Saturday for their next league game.
