Despite incessant rain, the Axe Cliff seniors held a well-supported Captain’s Day competition together with the Cooper Shield, writes Pete Motson.

The Captains Day trophy proved to be a c lose contest with the winner being Neil Moorcraft with 30 points.

The runner-up, also scoring 30 points, but edged into second on countback, was Ron Bragg and third was Bill Polley with his score of 29 points.

The Cooper Shield was also won on countback, with Dave Evans taking the honours with his score of 26 points leaving Dave Sammons, who also scored 26, edged into second place and B Cook, with 23, took third place.

Sadly, the heavy rain got the better of many players and some did not complete the 18 holes and these retired like a crowd of drowned rats to the clubhouse.- quite sensibly some of them were heard to say.

However, three golfers have got their names recorded in the newspaper! They are – Adrian Bishop who scored a two on the 11th hole, Mick Swann, who also scored a two, in his case on the mort tricky seventh and Malcolm Reynolds, who won the longest drive – the latter success coming as no surprise.
