Madeira bowlers were involved in a number of friendly fixtures over the past week, writes Jean Healey.

The first was a mixed meeting with Exonia that saw one rink end all square with the match honours going to Exonia.

Next up, Taunton Vivary visited and Madeira defeated them 58-37. In this match the rink of Dave Moody was behind until the 19th end at which point they turned things round to win by three shots.

Bob Finch’s team of Freda Relph, Davit Hitt and Penny Preece were ahead all the way and eventually closed out a 13-shot winning margin.

Another mixed match against visiting Torbay resulted in a 76-32 success with good wins on two rinks and a narrow five shot defeat (on the final end) for the third rink. Well done, all the players.

A men’s game against Budleigh saw Madeira win 59-48, thanks to a good win by Ken Roberts’ team of Dennis Huntley, Graham Cottey, and Chris Price, which compensated for a draw and a loss on the other two rinks.

The first men’s Over-60s League game resulted in an overall loss against Torquay, with one win, one draw and two losses. This league is always hotly contested with the format being two rinks playing at home and two rinks playing away.

The next day was the ladies’ representative game in the Foxlands league with the same format – two at home and two rinks away – this time against Mid Devon at Tiverton.

Both teams lost at home, but big wins away compensated sufficiently for Madeira to secure an overall 88-78 success with Catherine King’s team of Jan Roberts, Janet Grundy, and Nicky Fiddimore winning by 25.

Friday’s ladies’ match against Honiton was cancelled due to worrying adverse travelling conditions, but Budleigh ladies arrived on Saturday to win on one rink, but Madeira attained high scores on the other two.

Jean Rainton’s team of Penny Preece, Joan Mansell and Margaret Mahon had a high score helped by two ends scoring five and even one of six, with an overall match win of 86-41.
