On a very hot Sunday, just two AVRs made their way to Exmoor to take part in the Stagger/Stumble races, writes Dave Mutter.

The Stagger, a 16-mile mostly off-road run, includes 3,100ft of ascent, and starts in Minehead, quickly turning into a very steep and stony path to the highest point on Exmoor, Dunkery Beacon.

From there it is mostly downhill for the second half, presenting the runners with the fresh challenge of steep and sometimes slippery downhill slopes.

Graham Newton was very pleased with his time of 2:40:25 of torture to win the over MV65 prize.

Diane Newton chose to run the Stumble course; although much shorter, at six miles, it still includes over 1,000ft of ascent.

Although Diane approached the run with more than a little trepidation after hearing how tough it was, she was very surprised to find herself enjoying it, and was very satisfied with her time of 1:15:41.

Four AVRs ran the Great South Run, which is a pretty flat 10-mile race starting in Southsea and heading into Portsmouth, through the historic dockyards and other parts of the city before finishing along the Esplanade in Southsea.

There were some 20,000 runners taking part and Rob Collier was pretty happy to finish in 1:01:59 coming 142nd and seventh MV45.

Gillian Peach and Chris Hill crossed the line together in 1:27 and Yvette Hill, although suffering from a cold, finished well in 1:35.
