AVR athlete Jake Smith was one of the 57,000 runners at the Great North Run (13.1 miles) on Sunday, writes Dave Mutter.
To say he ran well would be an understatement, he finished 30th in 1:10:07, an absolutely superb performance.
Meanwhile, a motley crew of AVR runners, including Matt Hewer, Matt Clist, Josh Hopson and James Green, travelled to Martock on Sunday to take on The Ash Excellent Eight.
A bit of rain made for some very slippery sections, but overall the going was relatively good over the mostly flat terrain.
A fast start saw a pair of runners open up an early lead. Matt and James stayed within striking distance and closed the gap after a cagey start to be level by mile five.
Going into mile six, they used one of the few hills to up the ante and pass the lead runners, scattering a bewildered herd of cattle into the opposition for added confusion!
James Green (50:11) pulled clear to win from Matt Clist (50:37) in an AVR one-two!
Matt Hewer promised a sensible paced start and duly produced a strong run and finish to come in 12th (57:57).
A fine effort considering new shoes provided inevitable blisters. Josh Hopson also put in a solid performance to come 40th (1:06:31).
Oliver Thorogood won the latest Seaton Parkrun in 18:00 with AVRs John Blackledge third in a time of 19:23. SWRR member Ellie Dominey was the first lady home.
