Ammies Ladies win at University thanks to debut double from Simpson

Ammies returned to league action and served up an excellent all-round show to defeat the students on their own turf.

On a bitterly cold afternoon with an arctic wind blowing into their faces Ammies struggled to contain a vibrant home side in the opening half.

The students controlled the middle third of the pitch and looked on a regular basis to get the ball down their right flank where they had genuine pace and this was the route they used to open the scoring on 20 minutes.

Good movement from the striker created the gap for the winger to burst onto the ball to tuck it beyond Ammies keeper Rose.

Changes were made to try to break the University monopoly on possession with Hawkins tasked with getting close to the students play maker and Cordwell helping Jones at full back with the speedy winger.

The switch worked and, apart from one fine Rose save, the threat became less of an issue. However, with players used in deeper positions it restricted the Ammies attacking power.

Striker Wills was very isolated and only a couple of shots from the edge of the area by Beck warmed the keeper’s hands through to half time.

After the break, with the wind at their backs, Ammies looked a different side pressing the ball higher up the pitch. A key was the introduction of debutant striker Simpson who nearly scored with her very first touch, forcing the keeper into a brave stop after being put through by Beck.

The equaliser arrived via the move of the game. Rowe, who was superb at right back throughout, found Simpson down the line. She squared for Beck who cleverly moved the ball onto Rawlings and, from just inside the box, she curled a shot beyond the keepers reach.

Next Wills had a shot saved before Worsley fired wide and then Simpson had a shot blocked. Simpson was not to be denied though, and put Ammies ahead with a quarter of the game to go, as she strode onto a Beck through ball before clinically finishing. The home side looked to respond, but got little change out of the discipline Ammies back line, though Rose was required to make a couple of superb saves, first to keep out a header and then diving bravely at a strikers feet.

The points were sealed inside the final five minutes when new girl Simpson showed great strength and pace to shrug off a defender and break clear of the back line onto a Dunn long ball before calmly slotting past the keeper to complete the scoring.
