A woman has been hospitalised with a suspected broken leg after a go-kart crash at Woodbury Salterton.

The woman, reported to be 23 years old, was driving at the Raceworld venue when she lost control and crashed.

Ambulance crews attended, and the fire service was summoned to cut the steering column from the kart so she could be taken to hospital.

Raceworld’s Rob Twigg said: “She was driving too fast. There was nobody driving anywhere near her, and she just spun and went off into the boards.

“She couldn’t get out of the kart because you have to bend your legs to get in and out, so to allow her to be extricated safely it was decided to just cut the steering assembly.

“At the end of the day we offer as safe an environment as we can, but it’s a petrol-driven motorsport where you’re doing 35 to 40 miles per hour, and people need to be aware that in motorsport there are inherent dangers.”
