A teenager has appeared in court today (Monday) charged with the attempted murder and rape of a 10-year-old girl in Exmouth.

The 16-year-old boy - who cannot be named for legal reasons because of his age - appeared before an adult court at Exeter magistrates.

He is accused of the attempted murder and rape of a girl near Marley Road, Exmouth, last Thursday.

Prosecutor Emma Lenanton applied for a remand in youth detention accommodation.

The teenage defendant spoke only to say ‘yes’ when asked by the legal adviser if he understood the court proceedings.

Defence lawyer Lisa McArthur did not seek bail.

The teenager was remanded into local detention accommodation and will next appear before a district judge in Plymouth Youth Court on Thursday.

He nodded when told of the magistrates’ decision to remand him.

A formal press direction was made that the defendant nor the victim cannot be identified in any way.

In an unusual move, police also warned social media users about the restrictions ordered on cases involving youths and rape victims.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “We need to remind the public of the law surrounding this matter.

“Anyone who is alleged to be a victim of a sexual crime are automatically granted anonymity for life, regardless of their age and regardless of the outcome of any subsequent criminal trial.

“Any suspect under the age of 18 is also by law not allowed to be identified.

“These rules are not solely for media organisations to adhere to, they also apply to members of the public and includes information posted via social media.

“This may be seen as interfering with a live investigation and an active criminal trial, and therefore could see those who do not adhere, found in contempt of court.

“We therefore remind the public that it is vital they do not speculate on the identity of either the victim or the suspect in this case.”
