Donovan, 15, from Colyton, reels in the praise after completing a tough seamanship course

A Colyton teenager is on course for a successful career in the fishing industry.

Donovan Nevell, 15, has been commended after becoming one of the youngest to complete a three week course in basic seamanship.

“It was a significant achievement for someone of such a young age,” said his trainer Steve Postles.

The course was open to new entrants to the fishing industry and was run by the Southern Fish Industry Training Association Ltd.

Donovan’s father is a keen amateur fisherman and he is keen to go one step further and make it his career.

The Axe Valley Community College, where Donovan is a student, allowed him to attend one week of the course during the week set aside for year 11 work experience in December.

He attended the remainder of the course during the Christmas holidays and on Saturdays and Sundays.

The course consisted of two weeks training in safety, gear and catch handling, net mending, rope work, stability, navigation and boat handling. It was followed by one week of mandatory safety courses focusing on sea survival, firefighting, first aid, health and safety, plus a one day fishing vessel stability course.

Donovan was praised for showing “considerable application and commitment” to his chosen future career by organising the qualification entirely through his own efforts and attending full training days at the weekends and during the school holidays.

The course took place at the Lyme Regis Fisherman’s College at the Cobb Centre, Lyme Regis. Donovan was presented with a course completion certificate by the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Sally Holman.
