Residents back plan to relocate the school to a site near the village hall - with extra parking and new hard play area

Plans to build a new primary school at Uplyme have been given a big thumbs up by residents.

The vast majority of the 250 people who expressed a view at an exhibition to unveil the scheme have backed it.

Of the 116 feedback forms received by organsiers, 95 per cent were positively in favour, with three percent unsure and just two per cent opposed to the plan.

But the trustees of Mrs Ethelston’s School have made some changes to the project following suggestions made at the exhibition and consultation with neighbours to the site, which is next to the village hall.

They include:

* Increasing spaces at the shared car park from 31 to 40 – double the number of the existing village hall’s overflow park.

* Establishing a user/management agreement between the school and village hall trustees to ensure the car park provides the maximum benefit for the entire community and a safe environment during school hours.

* Including a new 35m by 21m all-weather hard play area next to the school and new shared car park, providing a total usable area of 735sq m, suitable for play times and team sports such as netball and five-a-side football.

The revised plan has already received strong support from the parish council which met to discuss it last week.

Rob Lane, trustee and foundation governor, welcomed the village’s backing for the new school.

He said: “It’s vital that we continue to provide an outstanding education to Uplyme’s children, and our plans to relocate the school are an essential part of this ongoing process.”

East Devon District Council planners are expected to rule on the outline application by January 2.
