CARNIVAL BOOSTER: Sidmouth Carnival Committee will benefit from the Budleigh Salterton Male Voice Choir’s first concert of 2013.
The event will take place at the town’s Methodist Church in High Street on Saturday, March 16, at 7.30pm.
One of the choir’s favourite special guests, soprano Val Howells, will be joining the choir for the evening.
Tickets (£6) are available from Paragon Books.
BALCONY BLOW: Plans to replace a bay window at Dukes in Sidmouth with a Juliette balcony have failed to win the support of town councillors.
Civic leaders said the proposal was “out of keeping and detrimental to the listed building” when they met last Wednesday and ruled they were unable to support the bid.
The district council will decide the fate of the scheme.
TEETERING TREE: An application to fix a garden wall destroyed by flooding, leaving a giant cedar tree teetering above the River Sid, has been supported by the town council.
Bridge House in Mill Street lost 40ft of its brick boundary, which also forms part of Sidmouth’s flood defences, during last summer’s extreme weather.
Since then the 100-year-old cedar, nurtured by the property’s elderly owners for decades, has become a tourist attraction as it hangs over the river.
A final decision on the application will made by the district council.
