Lucky escape for shoppers and motorists as lorry brings down tons of metalwork
Shoppers had a lucky escape after a lorry brought tons of scaffolding crashing down in the centre of Axminster today (Wednesday).
The giant articulated truck apparently clipped the metalwork, put up outside Trinity House kitchen shop, as it rounded the tight bend opposite the George Hotel, at around noon.
Fortunately no one was walking underneath when it crashed into the road.
Mitchell Savage, manager of Martins’ newsagents opposite, saw it come down.
He said the lorry had stopped and the driver had seemingly asked someone for directions before climbing back into his cab and setting off again. The vehicle then brushed the scaffolding which came down with a tremendous bang.
“It was lucky no one was walking there and no cars were following behind him,” he said.
Police and fire services are currently on the scene and workmen are clearing the scaffolding from the road.
The driver of the lorry was unhurt and was being interviewed by police.
