OLD SHIP: A black canopy to the rear of an old Exmouth pub has not been supported by town planners.

The proprietor of The Famous Ship Inn, High Street, Exmouth, has begun work on a black canopy to the rear of the pub.

Councillor Maddie Chapman said: “They should come up with a better idea. It looks tacky.”

Councillor Steve Gazzard said: “This is almost a retrospective application.

“Work is well underway. I have concerns about the dark nature of the cladding.

“I think it is quite out of keeping with the area - the area is full of white buildings.

“I don’t know if he intends to paint the cladding.”

Planning chairman Lynne Elson that this was the latest in series of applications at the address where the applicant had started work before planning consent had been given.

She said: “This should be pointed out to planning officers.”

The plans will now be considered by the district council.
