Plain clothes officers will be targeting offenders who fail to clean up after their pets, dog walkers have been warned.

PLAIN clothes police officers will be on ‘poo patrol’ in Ilfracombe during the coming weeks in an effort to crack down on dog fouling in the town.

Police have warned that irresponsible owners allowing their pets to foul public areas without cleaning up after them will be issued with on the spot fines of up to £75 or, if this is not possible, prosecution will be sought.

“Dog poo has been raised once again as a priority issue for people who live in Ilfracombe,” said PC Nella Barker, Ilfracombe Neighbourhood Beat Manager.

“It is not only a health hazard and unpleasant but unsightly for the town. While the majority of dog owners are responsible and pick up after their dogs, a minority continue to behave irresponsibly and spoil public areas.”

The latest initiative is being carried out in partnership with the North Devon Council dog warden and the Ilfracombe Town Council’s Community Safety Panel.

More details the responsibilities of dog owners can be found at www.northdevon.gov.uk.

  • Great response to a concern echoed by many of our community. Little things mean a lot to so many people, and it's good to see that the police are prepared to go the extra mile! Irresponsible dog walkers beware!
