Customer is given a £70 parking fine after spending more than £100 in the store and going over the time limit by half-an-hour.

A FAITHFUL customer of Asda Bideford was shocked to discover a parking ticket on his windscreen after spending more than £100 in the store.

Barry Draper, from Barnstaple, said he parked in the short stay car park at Asda while spending money in the store and its café.

He then bumped into some friends and popped into Atlantic Village for a quick coffee, but after returning to his car he found a £70 parking ticket waiting for him.

“I thought it was dreadful to receive a ticket for doing my shopping there after I had just spent all that money in the store,” said Mr Draper.

“I usually go to Asda every time I am in Bideford, at least once a month.

“If you’re going shopping around Asda and Atlantic Village you could be spending hours there.

“They should be encouraging people to stay not giving them parking tickets.”

Mr Draper said he spoke to both the parking attendant and the store manager, but neither would refund him the money.

“Both said there was nothing they could do because the free parking was only for two hours,” he said.

But when contacted by the Gazette, a spokesman for Asda said they would refund Mr Draper’s ticket.

The spokesman said: “We know that being able to park quickly and safely is our customers’ top priority, and we do everything we can to make sure there are spaces free.

“However we are happy to review parking charges on a case by case basis, where a customer has a genuine reason to be at the store.

“It looks like Mr Draper spent a little longer than usual shopping and eating in the cafe, so we have cancelled his parking charge on this occasion.”

Mr Draper confirmed the company has now refunded him, and said: “I’m a very happy chappy now; I’ve told them I may even go back there shopping again.”
