Local attraction seeking permission to create an off road mountain bike centre near Ilfracombe.

AN ILFRACOMBE attraction is seeking to create the first ever mountain biking trail centre in North Devon.

Keypitts Stables ‘n’ Quads near Killacleave has put in a planning application to set up a wide network of trails and runs to suit mountain bikers of all ages and abilities.

For more than 14 years Keypitts Farm has offered quad biking, horse riding and off road driving activities, but with poor summers, lower visitor numbers and the economic climate, owners Fred and Wendy Chugg say they are looking for alternative activities to offer.

The only other centres in the area are at Exeter and Bodmin, but following inquiries from mountain biking enthusiasts, the couple decided there was huge potential for such a centre in North Devon.

It is hoped the new centre would be a big draw for visitors and a boost to economy and tourism.

The aim would be to offer trails of up to 10 kilometres in length, from those the whole family can enjoy to extreme runs for daredevil cyclists.

The farm already has a cafe and changing facilities on site and cycle hire would be available.

“There doesn’t seem to be anything else like this in the area,” said Mr Chugg.

“Because we already run the quad centre, 90 per cent of the tracks already exist. We have been around to all the bike shops in the area, talked to lots of bikers and there seems to be quite a lot of interest locally.

“Initially the quads would run alongside it on separate tracks, but the aim is for it to carry on and take over from them.

“We have been inundated with offers of help to set it up, because there are a lot of enthusiasts out there with nowhere to go. We’re looking to try to create a business, but also an amenity as well.”

  • Brilliant! That's the best news I've heard yet this year. We are planning on moving to North Devon and have been scouring for 'proper' MTB'ing trails in the area but found nothing. I really hope this goes ahead and some good technical trails are built! Cycling and Mountain Biking specifically is growing fast, this would bring lots of visitors to the area. Especially with the added bonus of being able to play on bikes & Boards. Exciting news!
