ADVICE DAY: Bicton College is holding a Course Advice Day from 9am on today (Saturday, November 17) as part of Colleges Week 2012, which runs from November 11-18.

The Course Advice Day is open to all year 11 students who are interested in a course at Bicton College.

The aim is to showcase the opportunities offered by the college and raise awareness of what the college can do, such as providing the necessary skills to access a wide range of careers. Principal David Henley said: ‘This is a timely opportunity to visit our inspirational place of learning and meet the staff and students who make the college community a great experience’. Call 01395 562408 for information.

NOISE CONCERNS: There are concerns that a new 15-home development in Otterton could lead to noise pollution.

A revised planning application for 15 homes, which includes 10 affordable homes, with road access and landscaping on land adjacent to North Star, Ottery Street Otterton, has been submitted to district planning chiefs.

But at the last parish council meeting councillors said they could not recommend the plans for refusal or approve them because the ‘revised plans were incomplete as no pedestrian access had been included’. Clerk David Ottley agreed to write to the district council about the parish council’s concerns about possible noise pollution.

The application was filed in 2011, but there has been a delay in making a final decision because of concerns about noise pollution from the North Star Engineering business.

NOTICE: Otterton parish councillors have rejected an idea for a parish notice board in the bus shelter for fears it may be vandalised.

Alternatives could include a board at the old cemetery or in the Kings Arms.

FAIRLYNCH: The second of Fairlynch Museum’s 2012-13 Winter Talks is by Woodbury resident Mike Wilson will be an illustrated lecture entitled ‘Admiral Phillip and the Founding of Australia’.

Arthur Phillip was one of 18th century Australia’s most interesting pioneers who became the first Governor of New South Wales.

He is a prominent character in Timberlake Wertenbaker’s play Our Country’s Good, where he is shown as compassionate and just, but receives little support from his fellow officers. The talk is on Monday, November 19 at 7.30 pm in the Peter Hall, Budleigh Salterton. Doors open 7pm Admission is £2 (£3 for non-members).

OTTERTON CHURCH: The Advent Bazaar takes place on Saturday, November 24 at 10.30am in the Village Hall.

It includes plants, produce, cakes, jams, decorations for sale, tombola, bric-a-brac and a raffle. Entrance is £1 to include coffee and mince pies. Contributions to stalls and raffle gratefully received.

SHIPWRECK: The latest talk from the Otter Valley Association is on shipwrecks. Divers from the South West Maritime Archaeological Group have discovered shipwrecks off the south Devon coast including a Bronze Age trading vessel dated 1000BC. The talk is by Ron Howell on Tuesday, November 13 7.30pm at Otterton Village Hall.
