A drug addict from Exmouth has been ordered to receive help from the probation service after being found with heroin and crack cocaine during a police raid on his town centre home.

Christopher Andrew, aged 50, was originally arrested in an inquiry into dealing but he was only found with a small amount of drugs which were for his own use.

Andrew, of The Strand, Exmouth, admitted personal possession of heroin and crack. He was ordered to undertake 20 days of rehabilitation activities with the probation service, under a one-year community order.

At Exeter Crown Court Judge Timothy Rose told Andrew that the rehabilitation activities will address his drug use, financial problems, and how to make more productive and meaningful use of his time.

Mr Joss Ticehurst, prosecuting, said one wrap of heroin and four of crack cocaine were found in Andrew’s pockets when police raided his home on August 31 this year.

Police charged Andrew with possessing the drugs with the intention of supplying them but the case was dropped to one of simple possession because there was no evidence of dealing.

Mr Peter Seigne, defending, said Andrew is keen to work with the probation service and to change his lifestyle.

Mr Seigne said: “He says he is 50 and has another 15 years of useful working life but is not in a good place at the moment and it would be helpful to have assistance.”
