Gritters to be sent out overnight on Devon’s roads

Devon County Council is sending out gritters tonight as temperatures plummet

Motorists are being urged to take extra caution on the roads tonight and tomorrow morning as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.

Gritters will be going out in the early hours of the morning at 1am and possibly again at 6am.

Devon County Council said around 20 per cent of the network is gritted on those roads which carry 70 per cent of the traffic.

Stuart Hughes, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “Obviously with all the recent flooding and so much water running off from the surrounding land, freezing temperatures could bring extremely icy conditions.

“Whilst the gritters will be out in force, don’t assume a road has been treated. I would advise residents to drive with extreme caution certainly over the coming days whilst freezing temperatures are expected.”

In the meantime, problems remain at the following roads and bridges due to flooding or water damage:

The A379 at Frogmore is closed due to a burst water main, Wisdome Bridge, at Cornwood, is closed due to flood damage and Waterstave Bridge, near Bradninch, is closed.

Halberton to Sampford Peverell will be closed until at least tomorrow due to the canal works
