Exmouth celebrated the launch of Britain’s newest radio station by revealing its new name, which was a closely-guarded secret.

Listeners to Exmouth’s own radio station, Bay FM, on Monday learned it had a new name – Exmouth Air.

The re-launch of the station prompted hundreds of listeners to contact the studio and wish its co-founder Andy Green, and his team, continuing success.

Andy, who kept the name change under wraps and hid away the station’s newly-liveried car and logo, said scores of listeners tried to guess the new name.

Andy said the name change was prompted by the strong links the radio station has with its hometown, Exmouth.

He said: “Everyone wanted to guess the new name. I’ve been nervous; it’s like starting the station all over again.”

He added: “The local news, conversation and competitions that the residents of Exmouth have enjoyed for five years will continue as normal. Only the name has changed.”

The new name was celebrated by a host of Exmouth dignitaries and announced by town crier, Roger Bourgein.

Exmouth town councillors, mayor Jeff Trail and Richard Scott, and Devon county councillor Christine Channon backed the station rebrand.

Exmouth Air’s Julie Green thanked the council’s financial backing of the re-launch and Devon Signs donation of the station’s new blue and white signage.

She said: “It’s a close-knit community, everyone wants to help.”

Bay FM launched permanently in 2013 after a series of successful short-term trial broadcasts.

Some 25 volunteers regularly support the town’s not-for-profit radio station.
