Exmouth lifeboat volunteers were diverted away from a training exercise on Thursday (March 16) to help a fishing vessel in trouble.

At around 5pm crew members helped a boat after a rope wrapped around its propeller at the entrance to the River Exe.

The Shannon-class R and J Welburn took over towing the vessel from another fishing boat and took it to a mooring in the River Exe before returning to exercise at 5.40pm.

Yesterday (Monday, March 19) at around 2.30pm Exmouth RNLI was called out to ‘a false alarm with good intent’

A member of the public thought they had seen a capsized dinghy in the River Exe by the Commando base, in Lympstone.

When volunteers arrived they discovered a team of rowers who didn’t appear to need help.

After a further search of the river with Exmouth Coastguard to check if anyone else was in danger, the volunteers returned to the lifeboat station at 3.15pm.

The call outs rounded off a busy week for Exmouth’s lifeboat volunteers took a relief Shannon-class lifeboat from Cardiff to Torbay.

On Monday, March 13, two Exmouth crew members made up a passage crew to take Shannon-class lifeboat ‘13-12 Cossandra’ from Cardiff back to Poole.

On Monday night they stopped off at Brixham before arriving on Exmouth beach on Tuesday morning where Cossandra was on service at the lifeboat station before leaving for Poole at 3pm on Thursday (March 16) followed by the relief launch and recovery system.

Between Tuesday and Thursday (March 16) a new prototype of Shannon carriage on Exmouth beach was being tested.

Designed by East Devon-based Supacat, the new non-powered design would save RNLI ‘vital’ funds to run a future beach-launched Shannon-class station with less challenging terrain.

Exmouth RNLI’s own Shannon carriage was installed at the lifeboat station following a successful funding appeal in 2014.
